"Turning the Tide: 2009 International Enviromental Sculpture Exhibition," National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, Pingtung County, Taiwan - December 5, 2009 - January 10, 2010

Jane initiated the first art exhibition at Taiwan's National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium and worked with an arts management company (PMA Associates) to curate an international exhibition of art about marine environmental issues. The exhibition included site-specific installations created by Karin van der Molen of the Netherlands, Thierry Godet of France, and Ya-chu Kang of Taiwan. This photo shows the installation "The Trap" created by Karin van der Molen in the grand hall entry to the "Waters of the World" pavillion at the national aquarium.

2009 Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival: Focus on Land, Water, Culture, Guandu Nature Park, Taipei, Taiwan, June 13 - September 15, 2009

Jane was the curator again for the 4th year of this annual international outdoor sculpture exhibition at Guandu Nature Park, Taipei, Taiwan. This is the only outdoor sculpture festival in Taiwan that focuses on environmental issues. Jane started the Festival at Guandu Nature Park in 2006 with her own installation and 5 other international artists she invited to join her. The Sculpture Festival expanded in 2007 to include 12 international artists. For 2008 Jane reviewed proposals from 165 artists from all over the world to select 8 artists to come to Guandu Nature Park in Taiwan and create their works . For the 2009 Festival Jane received 215 entries from artists all over the world and made the selection of the 8 international artists for 2009 in March. Artists selected were: Roy Staab and Karen McCoy, USA; Stuart Ian Frost, Norway; Bonggi Park, Korea; Ashish Ghosh, India; Merijn Vrij, Netherlands; and Chao-chang Lee and Chun-sen Yang, Taiwan.

"Frolic: Humor and Mischief in Contemporary Taiwanese Art" - Traveling show

With support from the Taipei Cultural Center and the Council for Cultural Affairs the "Frolic" exhibition of contemporary Taiwanese art dealing with humor and mischief that Jane co-curator Dr. Thalia Vrachipoulos of New York City traveled to selected university galleries throughout the United States during 2008 and 2009.

Jane is the curator again this year for an international outdoor sculpture exhibition at Guandu Nature Park, Taipei, Taiwan. Jane started the Festival at Guandu Nature Park in 2006 with her own installation and 5 other international artists she invited to join her. The Sculpture Festival expanded in 2007 to include 12 international artists. For 2008 Jane reviewed proposals from 165 artists from all over the world to select 8 artists to come to Guandu Nature Park in Taiwan and create their works on site from April 7-18. The artists worked with volunteers and staff and used local natural materials to create their works, each focused on some aspect of the environment and global warming.

Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival,  Guandu Nature Park, Taipei, Taiwan

Jane initiated an outdoor sculpture festival in Taiwan focused on environmental art with natural materials. She curated the first International Outdoor Sculpture Festival at Guandu Nature Park, an urban nature park near Taipei City.  The exhibition opened on Saturday, May 6, with an opening ceremony at 2 PM.  The exhibition included site specific sculpture installations by 6 international artists:

The invited artists worked at the nature park in Taipei from April 28 - May 7, 2005, and public participation activities with the artists took place 10AM - 4PM, May 6 and May 7.  The artists used natural materials and made works with an environmental focus to reflect the mission of the Nature Park. "Paper Possibilities - Contemporary Paper Works by Taiwanese and Chinese Artists"

Participating Artists

"Paper Possibilities" contained 1 - 3 works by each of these artists. The photograph on the left shows the work of Huang, LiRung of Taipei, Taiwan. It is a digital photograph with a paper sculpture and is titled "The Existence of a Pear." The work on the left is by artist Lee, Hui-Fang of Taichung County, Taiwan. It is an installation with handmade papers and a mailing carton. It is titled "Made in Taiwan - Taiwan in the Making." Curator Cathy McLaurin installed the works for this exhibition at Merrimack College Gallery while Jane is continuing her work in Taiwan.

Jane organized and curated this exhibition that will be shown at institutions in the USA during 2004-05. As part of the work Jane has done for her Fulbright grant in Taiwan, Jane has made contact with many contemporary artists in Taiwan and mainland China and looked at their works to exchange ideas and discuss processes. During her first six months in Taiwan she has lived in Taipei and traveled to Tainan, Taichung and other parts of Taiwan as well as to Shanghai and Hong Kong.

This exhibition is an opportunity for Taiwanese and Chinese artists to show their works in the USA, and for people in the USA to see contemporary works by artists from a different culture. This exhibition features works using paper as a material and increases awareness of the possibilities for creating innovative art with paper materials. The artists Jane selected for the exhibition reflect concerns with contemporary issues as well as the use of paper material and represent a variety of media, techniques and approaches. Works in the exhibition include such techniques as paper cutting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation art, papermaking and mixed media.

Accessibility 2003: From the Outside In," Sumter, South Carolina
Sept. 27 - Nov. 1. 2003

Jane was the guest curator and artist-in-residence for Sumter, South Carolina's 5th annual exhibition of site-specific installation art held in downtown Sumter at indoor and outdoor sites. Jane worked s an artist in residence in Sumter for three weeks and was also the curator for this international exhibition of public art in indoor and outdoor sites along Main Street of Sumter. The exhibition is an annual event, and this was the first time that an outside curator had been invited and also the first time that the curator chose artists from outside the region. Jane's idea was to have outsiders look at the community from a different perspective and involve local people in re-examining their own town and discovering its uniqueness and helping to revitalize the community.

Jane selected 9 other artists to join her in Sumter to create site specific installations. Two artists were from Japan, one from South Korea, one from Canada and one from Israel with the others from CA, NM, KY, and New York. The artists worked in Sumter for several weeks prior to the opening of the exhibition on Sept. 27. Each artist had a local partner in Sumter who acted as host and guide and helped the artists to create their public art installations along Main Street in Sumter.
