In Yilan County I am living in the community of A-jie (Two Knots), and my studio space is in an old temple building that is now being used as the community culture center.   The A-jie Community Culture  Center is a lively and interesting place with a group of local artists who are making art with me and learning how to make paper from local plant materials.  While in Yilan County I am also working with students in Hushan Elementary School and Lotung Elementary School.  The children are using local plant materials to create indiviual paper artworks, and we will make an outdoor environmental art installation with paper pulp and wildflower seeds, a living, evolving map of Yilan County.  The residency in Yilan County began with a press conference at Hushan School where the County Magistrate and other visiting dignitaries learned to make paper with the students.  In Yilan County I will also share my art processes and ideas with local teachers in papermaking art workshops as well as give a public lecture.  My art work is displayed at the A-jie Community Culture Center, and a welcome party, a Halloween party and other events are planned.  The artists at A-jie Center and I have gathered many plants for papermaking, and I will be creating Yilan site maps about my experience of this time and this place. The workers at the temple learned how to put paper on the columns in the temple recording the impressions of characters and figures. A Halloween party was held for the children of A-jie on October 31. They made masks and then went on a procession visiting volunteers who gave treats to the masked tricker-or-treaters. Everyone had fun and it was good to see the Halloween spirit in Taiwan.
